Q How come the image in the editor looks like the colors are blended together, rather than a solid color in each grid square of the editor?

A This problem is only exhibited by certain ATI video cards.  Check the ATI web site or windrivers.com to make sure you have the latest version drivers for your video card.  If the latest drivers do not fix the problem, please let ATI know of it, and you may wish to use the workaround stated in the answer to the next question below.

Q I just installed the Creative Labs video adapter card that uses the Banchee chip set, and when I open an icon for editing in IconEasel 98, the editing grid is black.  What's wrong?

A Unfortunately, there appears to be a bug in either the Creative Labs drivers or the Banchee chip set itself, that causes this.  Please contact these parties about this problem, as there is nothing I can do to correct it.  However, there is a work-around for the problem.  From the "System" icon in Control Panel, you can go to the performance tab and click on the graphics button and turn down the hardware acceleration, and IconEasel will work correctly.  So far, the Creative Labs is the only Banchee video card that we've seen with this problem, so I tend to think that it is more likely a driver problem and not a chipset problem.

Q How come my 256 color and truecolor icons are drawn on the Windows 95 desktop in only 16 colors, but they look fine in Icon Easel and EasyIcons 95?

A In order for Windows 95 to display desktop icons with more 16 colors, you must have the Microsoft Plus Pack. If you do have the Plus Pack then go to the control panel, double click on "Display", find the "Plus" tab and mark the checkbox titled "Show icons using all possible colors".

Q I don't have Microsoft Plus!, is there any way for me to view my desktop icons with more than 16 colors?

A If you are not comfortable editing your system registry, please do not attempt this. If, on the other hand, you do feel confident in your abilities to use regedit.exe to edit your registry, the following entries have proven to work on many Win 95 systems. I don't know about Win NT and do NOT recommend it. If you decide to do this, you do so at your own risk. Please do not ask me for assistance, if you toast your registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon BPP=16

HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon BPP=16

Q How Is it possible to edit icons embedded in .exes or .dlls without extracting them?

A Open the exe or dll file in EasyIcons 98. Now, by clicking on it, select the icon you wish to modify. From the menu choose Edit|Edit Icon. You must be using IconEasel 98 as your Icon Editor. Make any changes you wish to the Icon and then save it. Note: you will not be able to alter the size or the color depth of the icon in an exe or dll, if you wish to do this, save the exe or dll as a library first, and  then modify the library icons instead. Now from the EasyIcons menu choose Library|Save Executable. You will then be prompted to confirm whether or not you do in fact want to alter the exe file. If so, answer Yes.

Q I have an Icon with 3 images, a 32x32 image and a 16x16 image, and a 48x48 image. EasyIcons will export the 32x32 Image as a bitmap, but not the 16x16 or the 48x48 images. How can I export these images to bitmap files?

A This must be done with IconEasel. First, open the icon in question and when prompted for the image you wish to edit, select the size you wish to export. Now, from the IconEasel menu choose File|Save As Bitmap. Note: The color depth of the bitmap, will match that which is set in the combo box on the toolbar. Also, any transparent(screen) areas will be changed to match the current right mouse color.

Q Can I create Icons from existing bmp, gif and jpg image files with IconEasel?

A Yes, from the menu choose File|New|Icon, then choose Edit|Paste Image From File and select the desired file.

Q How can I make an animated cursor from a series of .bmp, .jpg, or .gif files that I already have on my system?

A First, from the IconEasel menu choose File|New|Animated Cursor. Now set the desired color depth from the dropdown box on the toolbar. Using the toolbar on the Ani-Cursor Control box, add as many frames as you will need, using the "Paste Frame After" or "Paste Frame Before" buttons. Then select a frame, by clicking on it with the mouse., and from the IconEasel menu choose Edit|Paste Image From File and choose the image file to paste into this frame. Repeat this step for each frame in the sequence and when finished, set your Hot Spot and save the animated cursor.

Q I have an earlier version of EasyIcons and/or IconEasel. Is there any charge to upgrade to the latest version and will my current license files work with the new versions?

A Currently, there is no fee for upgrading to the latest version and your existing license files will work with the latest versions.

Q Is it possible to change the existing yellow folder icon in Windows 95? If so, how does one change the folder individually, like the folder for My Documents? Would your program do this?

A If it is a shortcut to a folder, you can use any icon you desire for the shortcut to the folder or file. However, if you are referring to how the folders look in Windows Explorer, the answer is no, these applications will not change how the folders appear in Explorer.

Q I am already a registered user of either EasyIcons or IconEasel...How much will it cost me if I decide to register the other application I haven't registered?

A It will cost only $12.00 to register either application, provided you have already registered either EasyIcons or IconEasel. If diskettes are required, you must include shipping($4.00 US or $6.00 Foreign), otherwise only the license will be e-mailed to you. If you register online, please specify in the comments section of the order form that you are already a registered user of one of the applications.
